Overview
Bullying is not a new issue but rapidly evolving technology has seen an immense increase in cyberbullying. Although cyberbullying does have a lot in common with more traditional bullying it has the potential to be far more damaging. The use of visual media, the anonymity of the internet, the physical separation from the victim and the ever increasing audience means that there are more perpetrators and more victims than ever before.
Children and teenagers who use and understand the technology continue to find new and more aggressive ways of targeting their victims. The nature of the internet and technology is such that simply banning a program or application is redundant. A replacement program or a new innovation will quickly appear in its place. This means that many teachers, parents and students are at a loss for how to combat cyberbullying.
At CQR Consulting our experts spend their days outsmarting hackers and protecting the information and technology assets of our clients. We understand that due to the dynamic nature of the internet it is essential to empower users to make informed decisions rather than implement controls and barriers. Not only will people circumvent controls, they will also lack the skills needed to make wise decisions when faced with new programs, applications or incidents.
We have developed ‘Disconnect’ as a way to educate and empower all members of the school community. We passionately believe that when people are well informed about risks, solutions and prevention methods they are far better equipped to deal with the challenges they face both in the real world and in the virtual world.
Disconnect contains information and advice for students, parents and teachers on understanding and dealing with cyberbullying. We hope this information can be used to make your school a safer and happier environment.
